Ecological Benefits
Promotes biodiversity in Maryland's woodland ecosystems by providing essential habitat and food for native pollinators. The native clematis's fragrant flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, moths, and bees. It is the host plant for the Clematis Clearwing moth. Its delicate flowers and adaptability to shaded environments contribute to the health and balance of local natural systems. Clematis is dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants. Both have showy flowers though only female plants have showy seed heads.
