JOB DESCRIPTION: READY Crew Leader

 

Reports to: Landscape Foreman

 

Job Overview: 

The Crew Leader leads, supervises, and instructs, a crew of 1 Assistant Crew Leader and 3 Crew Members in the construction of rain gardens, conservation landscapes, and other stormwater management practices, as well as leading their crew in performing landscaping maintenance, invasive plant removal, stream cleanup, and more.  As the first line of management, he or she is responsible for handling disciplinary matters, which may include escalating issues to higher level management.  He or she is also responsible for ensuring that team members have the skills and training necessary to complete their assignments correctly, safely, and in a timely manner.  Working with operational and administrative staff, the Crew Leader will help to coordinate and implement the work plan for each day.  The results of what a crew does needs to be on time, in budget, and meet or exceed quality expectations.  A Crew Leader ensures that the crew meets those objectives in performing their work.  A Crew Leader also motivates their team and participates in the professional development of the Crew Members.  While the Assistant Crew Leader is the designated Safety Officer for the crew, the Crew Leader holds the ultimate responsibility for ensuring the entire crew works safely and in a safe manner, and ensures crew operations do not endanger those not in the crew, such as customers.  As EcoWorks rolls out new service offerings, such as the Rent-An-EcoCrew service, the Crew Leader has the responsibility for ensuring the success of the program through proper execution and delivery of the service.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Lead and supervise a crew to properly implement and maintain projects

  • Ensure that Assistant Crew Leader and Crew Members perform their tasks skillfully, safely, and in a workmanlike fashion

  • Ensure the crew delivers EcoWorks services timely, efficiently, and of expected quality (such as for tree planting, installing bayscapes, performing Rent-An-EcoCrew work, and so forth)

  • Manage and report crew attendance

  • Read and implement Work Plans, Landscape Designs, and Planting Plans

  • Determine and assign daily tasks to Crew Members

  • Plan, execute, and assess the day to day activities of the crew to ensure adherence to project schedule

  • Oversee clean up of job sites and proper storage and/or disposal of materials 

  • Communicate progress and issues to Landscape Foreman

  • Assist in construction and maintenance as needed.

 

 

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must be 18-25 years of age

  • Must be a Howard County resident

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

  • Able to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds repetitively throughout a day

  • Must have reliable transportation to the initial job site

  • May be asked to use a personal vehicle to reach additional job sites, if applicable.  Approved mileage is reimbursed.

  • Must be dependable

  • Proven track record of strong leadership, communications, and process improvement skills 

  • Experience in landscaping or environmental field work

  • Preference for prior experience with READY program

     

Wage: $15.25/hr

Job Timeline:

This is a full-time, hourly, seasonal position that begins with Crew Leader training on June 22, 2020, ahead of Crew Member training which starts on July 1, 2020.  The READY program is scheduled to run until August 14, 2020.  Given the coronavirus situation, the start and end dates of this year's READY program are approximate and are subject to change.  Crew Leader hours during the Summer are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m, with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.  No paid holidays.  Weekend work opportunities may be available but are not mandatory.  Work in the field is weather-dependent.  Indoor training and professional development opportunities may be offered on bad-weather days.
