What is Alternative Spring Break?

Howard EcoWorks’ Alternative Spring Break is a voluntary opportunity for you to:

  • Give back to your local community

  • Help the environment

  • Learn about local environmental issues and how you can help

  • Make new friends

  • See what working in the Summer READY (Restoring the Environment and Developing Youth) program is like.

What can you expect from Alternative Spring Break?

  • Have fun

  • Make new friends

  • Spend the day outside

  • Be educated on local environmental issues

  • Be directed by an experienced Crew Leader

  • Be given safety training related to tools and work habits

  • Perform work such as weeding, planting, mulching and other landscape-type tasks

  • Be given preference for a summer job, if you are interested, with the summer READY program based on performance during Alternative Spring Break

When and where is Alternative Spring Break?

  • The hours are 9 am to 3 pm.

  • Alternative Spring Break dates are:
    April 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th.

  • Locations will be around Howard County, primarily in the Columbia/Ellicott City area.  You will be notified of your site and meeting location at least one week before your scheduled volunteer date(s).

What are the requirements of Alternative Spring Break?

  • Howard County residency.

  • Ages 15-25.

  • Commit to one or more full days between April 6-10
    (no weekend hours are available.)

  • A good attitude and interest in the environment.

  • Willing and able to work outside performing moderate physical activity.  Alternative Spring Break will be held in a light rain but not in a moderate or heavy rain.  You will be notified the day before your scheduled work day if plans may change based on weather.

What will I bring to Alternative Spring Break and what will be provided?

You should bring:

  • A full water bottle.

  • A bagged lunch.

  • Long pants and boots preferred or sneakers/shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.

We will provide:

  • Work gloves.

  • Tools.

  • Coolers of water to re-fill water bottles.

  • Snacks.

  • Bathrooms are not available at each site.  Locations of nearby bathrooms will be provided.  We will provide transportation to bathrooms with your/your parents’ consent.  

What will be the daily schedule?

9:00 am   –  9:30 am Welcome, introductions, ice-breaker activity

9:30 am   – 10:30 am Environmental education and safety review

10:30 am – 12:00 pm Work activity

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Bathroom break, lunch and check-in

1:00 pm   – 2:30 pm Work activity

2:30 pm   – 3:00 pm Clean-up and debrief

Due to an abundance of caution, the planned Alternative Spring Break has been cancelled. However, we are currently discussing new opportunities for volunteers to experience our work and help the environment. As soon as any plans are confirmed we will announce it here.
