PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Howard EcoWorks seeks to create green jobs in Howard County while improving watershed health through the construction and maintenance of stormwater and habitat management projects.  

The HEWmanpower Cohort begins in the Spring and works through the Fall. The Cohort constructs and maintains green stormwater practices on public and private land. Practices include rain gardens, conservation landscapes, bio habitats,  and more! The Cohort receives both industry related and general workforce development skills training as well as exposure to local and regional environmental issues. Upon successful completion of the program, members of the HEWmanpower Cohort will receive 
Chesapeake Bay Professional Landscaper - Associate (CBPL-A) certification and will participate in a networking event where they will have the opportunity to meet with other employers in the green industry to explore further career opportunities.


Job Overview:

The Materials Handler maintains the inventory of tools, equipment and landscaping materials for projects that include various stormwater management practices such as rain gardens, conservation landscapes, stream debris removal, maintenance, etc. The Materials Handler is also responsible for the safe transport, protection, storage, control and disposal of said materials, tools and equipment throughout the cycle of project implementation.

 

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Maintains inventory by identifying, labeling, and placing materials and supplies in storage and recording location of inventory.

  • Transports materials, supplies and plants as needed for various projects

  • Verifies and pulls materials and supplies needed for day to day implementation of project plans.

  • Maintains in-process inventory at work centers by delivering materials and supplies.

  • Documents materials and supplies disposition by assessing stock and condition on a weekly basis.

  • Maintains safe and appropriate storage of materials and ensures storage facility and tarps are orderly and well maintained

  • Maintains truck and utility trailer by completing pre- and post- use inspections and immediately reporting need for repairs

  • Contributes to team effort as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

  • Able to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds

  • Must have reliable transportation to initial job site

  • Must be dependable

  • Strong leadership, communications and process improvement skills

  • Experience in landscaping or environmental field work

  • Ability to operate a truck with a utility trailer


This is a full-time, hourly, seasonal position that begins in March and works through November (possibly mid December). Crew Member hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (during the summer, hours shift to 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Weekends and holidays are not scheduled work days.

8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (3 a.m. - 3 p.m. during the summer months)
